The healthcare sector continued its long-term growth streak with 28,900 jobs added in May, according to the employment figures released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Year to year, the U.S. economy added 336,000 healthcare jobs from May 2017 to May 2018 (15.996 million total).
The ambulatory health sub-sector added 17,900 jobs in May, bringing the total to 7.473 million. Ambulatory care positions include physicians offices, dental offices, outpatient care centers and other care facilities.
Hospitals added 6,200 jobs in May, bringing the nationwide total to 5.167 million. Nursing and residential care facilities added 4,800 jobs in May, bringing that nationwide total to 3.356 million.
Overall, the U.S. economy added 223,000 jobs in May, and the unemployment rate ticked down to 3.8 percent from 3.9.
