Glassdoor’s 2018 Best Places to Work list of companies with 1,000 or more employees included 14 healthcare organizations among the top 100. The list was published on Dec. 5.
The highest-ranked healthcare company was previously unranked St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Memphis, Tenn.-based facility that is a leading medical research organization and provides cost-free care for high-risk children’s cancer patients.
St. Jude’s top 10 ranking was the second time a healthcare company cracked Glassdoor’s top 10 in the 10 years the online employee ratings company has published its list. The only other top 10 appearance for a healthcare company was MD Anderson Cancer Center at No. 5 in 2013.
While the top 100 of large companies was dominated by healthcare, Glassdoor published a top-50 list of companies with fewer than 1,000 employees. The only healthcare company on that list was Ohio-based automated prior authorization company CoverMyMeds.
The No. 1-ranked large company was Facebook, followed at No. 2 by last year’s top-ranked company, Boston-based business consultancy Bain & Company.
Glassdoor’s rankings are based on its employee ratings system, which allows current and former employees to rate workplace happiness factors such as salary, benefits, company culture and whether the company warrants a recommendation to a friend.
Here are the 14 healthcare-related companies on Glassdoor’s top 100 list.
THE TOP FIVE
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (No. 9 overall)
St. Jude was founded in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas. His daughter, actor Marlo Thomas, and a parade of celebrity spokespeople such as Michael Strahan and Jennifer Anniston work each year to raise billions of dollars to support the pediatric cancer care and research that helps patients and families battle brain tumors, childhood leukemia and other deadly health conditions. Danny Thomas’ mantra for St. Jude was “no child should die in the dawn of life.” Employees at St. Jude feel engaged in the company mission to advance cures and the means of prevention for catastrophic pediatric diseases.
New York-Presbyterian Hospital (No. 32)
The New York City-based research hospital is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. With more than 20,000 employees, NYP hosts more than 2 million visits per year.
Boston Scientific (No. 35)
One of the leading medical device developers in the world, Boston Scientific is known for its focus on workplace sustainability.
Johnson & Johnson (No. 38)
One of the iconic brands in American healthcare, Johnson & Johnson manufactures consumer health products, medical devices, pharmaceutical products and more.
Smile Brands (No. 43)
Founded in 1998 by combining a number of smaller dental service organizations, Smile Brands is now the fourth-largest DSO in the United States, with more than 350 practices. Smile is the first DSO to be named on Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work list.
